Pirate Themed Birthday Party

Children have always been fascinated by pirates and buried treasures with treasure maps. A pirate theme kids party can be one of the most successful parties you will ever have. Take some time and research some great pirate party ideas.

Pirate costume for the Birthday Boy

Look around your local thrift shops for:
an old bandanna,
a colourful shirt,
black or grey pants and an
old black belt.
Cut the shirt sleeves and pant legs to ¾ lengths and fray the edges. Make an eye patch out of black card stock or heavy black felt with a black shoelace to tie around you son’s head. Fit the belt to the child’s waist and you’re good to go.

Use black makeup to put smudges on your son’s face for the appearance of a rough pirate beard.

Invitations
Custom “Treasure map” invitations like the one pictured below showcase the guest of honour and are completely customizable. Click the image for more customizable samples.

Decorations:

You can easily decorate your house for a pirate themed birthday party. Red, black and yellow and gold are great choices for creating a pirate feel.
Create a poster for the door that says “AHOY MATEYS – WELCOME ABOARD!”. Depending on the age of your child, they can even help with this one!
Transform the party room into a pirate’s hide-out with pirate flags complete with skull and crossbones.
Paint brown boxes to resemble wood crates, add gold plastic beads and other treasures.
Cover your table with a black table cloth and scatter gold chocolate coins and plastic jewels.
Include a pirate chest pinata to the decorations and then use it as an activity later.

Games:

• Treasure Hunt
• Pin the peg-leg on the pirate or pin the eye-patch on the pirate
• “walk the plank” for the younger kids, of course, assuming you have a pool and all the kids can swim,
• Musical Islands:  Like musical chairs, only use a piece of paper in place of the chairs.
•Fishing:  Use cardboard fish with paper clips, stick poles with string and magnet.
• Cannonball Pop:  Use black balloon with prize slips inside a few of them.
• Peg Leg Race:  Three legged races.
• Gold Nugget Treasure Hunt: Spray paint small rocks to make the gold.  Hide.  Give each child a handmade ‘nugget’ bag made from black cloth.
• Panning for gold: spray paint some rocks (more of that trusty gold spray paint) gold. Fill a small wading pool with water and added a 25 lb. bag of sand (about $3) and the “gold nuggets”. Give the children metal pie plates and show them how to “pan” for gold.
• Marooned: A game of tag where the person chasing everyone is “Shark” and the marooned sailors can go to the “Island” (home free – a towel on the floor) one at a time.  When the shark catches a sailor he becomes a shark too and tries to catch sailors.  The last remaining sailor wins the game.
• Decorate felt pirate hats.
